Why Dried Dog Treats Last Without Preservatives: The 11% Moisture Rule

Belcher · October 28, 2026
In shortDried treats keep without preservatives because of moisture. Bacteria and mold need water to grow, so drying a treat thoroughly keeps it fresh for a long time without artificial preservatives. Belcher dries every treat to 11% moisture or less.

Moisture decides freshness

Most food spoilage is caused by microorganisms, and they need the water inside food to multiply. Drying removes that water and makes growth difficult — the same reason dried fish and jerky keep at room temperature.

How Belcher dries its treats

  • Raw material is trimmed and washed, then fully dried and sterilized at high temperature.
  • Moisture is brought down to 11% or less, greatly lowering the chance of spoilage or mold.
  • That is how the treats keep a long shelf life with no artificial preservatives, gluten or colorants.

Common questions

Why is the liver so dark? As it dries at high temperature, moisture leaves and the tissue shrinks and becomes denser, turning dark. It is completely natural.

Is the small packet a preservative? No — it is an oxygen absorber that keeps the treats fresh. It may warm up or swell when exposed to air, so reseal the bag after feeding.

Why do they smell? With no chemical additives, the natural smell of the raw ingredient remains.

Storing at home

  1. Keep away from direct sunlight in a cool, dry place.
  2. Reseal the zipper fully after every feeding — moisture getting back in shortens shelf life.
  3. Refrigerate once opened and use soon.
Always feed under supervision and adjust portions to your dog's breed and weight. Not for ruminants such as cattle, or for animals under 3 months old.
